In October 2021, three CPI cities in North Sumatra recorded deflation, namely Pematangsiantar of 0.36 percent; Medan by 0.05 percent; and Gunung Sitoli by 0.07 percent. While the other two cities inflation, namely Sibolga by 0.11 percent; and Padangsidimpuan by 0.06 percent. Thus, the combined 5 CPI cities in North Sumatra in October 2021 had a deflation of 0.06 percent.
In October 2021, Medan deflated 0.05 percent or there was a decline in the Consumer Price Index (CPI) from 105.03 in September 2021 to 104.98 in October 2021. Deflation occurred due to a decline in prices from three expenditure groups, namely the food group, beverages, and tobacco by 0.15 percent; household equipment, equipment, and routine maintenance group by 0.65 percent; and the recreation, sports, and culture group by 0.41 percent. Six expenditure groups experienced inflation, namely clothing and footwear by 0.02 percent; health group by 0.10 percent; transportation group by 0.16 percent; information, communication, and financial services group by 0.01 percent; food and beverage/restaurant supply group by 0.11 percent; and the personal care and other services group by 0.26 percent. The other two groups did not experience changes in the index, namely the housing, water, electricity, and household fuel groups and the education group.The main commodities contributing to deflation during October 2021 in Medan include green mustard, pears, rice, dencis fish, air transportation, laundry deodorizer/softener, and tomatoes.Of the 24 CPI cities on Sumatra Island, 19 cities recorded inflation. The highest inflation was in Bungo at 0.78 percent with a CPI of 106.57 and the lowest was in Pangkal Pinang at 0.03 percent with a CPI of 105.01.
